Martin Meier

Climbing instructor (SBV)

Ridge climbingAlpine climbing

Martin is from Appenzell, with the Alpstein right on his doorstep. He feels at home wherever the terrain gets steep: on rock with rope and gear, or high above the summits under a paraglider.

Ridges are what draw him most. Solid rock under your hands, a drop on either side, the next tower already waiting ahead – nowhere does he experience the Alps as directly as up there.

He doesn't keep these moments to himself. He takes you out into the alpine world and shows you, step by step, how much there is to discover.

Climbing grades

We give the difficulty in the French scale, as used in Swiss climbing gyms and crags, with the UIAA scale for comparison. Alpine routes often feel harder than crag routes of the same grade because of protection, terrain and altitude.

FrenchUIAA
3a–4cIII – IV+First steps
Big holds and footholds, mostly vertical or less steep. Ideal for your first climbs and for kids.
5a–5cV− – VIEasy to moderate
Typical routes after a basic course: slightly smaller holds, good footwork starts to matter. Very doable with some practice.
6a–6b+VI+ – VII+Intermediate
For regular climbers: steeper walls, smaller holds, technique and a cool head when leading.
6c–7b+VIII− – IX−Advanced
For well-trained climbers: overhangs, small edges, often several attempts before sending.
7c–9cIX – XIIElite
Years of targeted training. The hardest routes in the world today are 9c.
